We have received the following email warning from Leicestershire County NHW:-
Issue date: 27 January 2012
Type: Statement
We are aware that an email entitled 'Population Census: a message to everyone - act now' is being circulated, allegedly in the name of National Statistician, Jil Matheson. This email demands individuals provide further personal information, supposedly for the Census and threatens fines for non-compliance.
This email is a scam and a hoax. It has no connection whatsoever with the National Statistician, the 2011 Census or the Office for National Statistics.
We believe the links in the e-mail could download malware to any computer where the user clicks on the links. This could put your personal data, including financial information, at risk.
Anyone receiving this, or similar emails, should delete them, not open any links and certainly not provide any information.

We have been informed about the following recent burglaries:-

Briargate Drive (close to Queensgate Drive). On Wednesday 18th January between 4.30pm and 9.00pm a house was burgled. Damage was caused to a rear conservatory door and electrical items were taken.

Tempest Road. On Tuesday 17th/morning of Wednesday 18th January a house was burgled. The burglar alarm was damaged, access gained via a rear patio door and electrical items were taken.

Stolen car recovered in Birstall

The police are asking for anybody on Johnson Road (close to Loughborough Road) who may have seen a Grey BMW 5 Series being parked and left near to the junction with Went Road. This vehicle was stolen from a property in Seagrave overnight on Saturday 14th - Sunday 15th January.

Burglary - Johnson Road

Between 8.00pm on Saturday 14th January and 9.50am on Sunday 15th January, a house on Johnson Road was burgled. Along with other property a vehicle was also taken.

Found at the scene of this burglary were a pair of shears and a spade. These do not belong to the victim or any of the close neighbours. Please could residents of Johnson Road, Went Road, Copeland Road and Fielding Road check their sheds etc and report any incidents of break-ins.

Burglary at opticians in Birstall

Officers from Charnwood local policing unit are appealing for public help after a burglary at an opticians in Birstall.
The incident took place at about 10.30pm on Thursday December 8 at Henry Smith and Hamylton Opticians in Sibson Road when the premises was broken into and a number of frames were damaged or stolen.
Various makes of frames were either stolen or damaged during the incident including Prada, Versace, Ted Baker, Rayban and Prestige Elegance.
PC Steve Denny is investigating the incident, he said: “We would appeal to anyone who has been approached by someone selling similar frames in the last month to contact us.
“The Prestige Elegance frames are exclusive and only available at this opticians, if you know anything about these frames or the incident please contact us.”

Warning over alternative Neighbourhood Watch website

POLICE across the country are warning about a website calling itself neighbourhood watch.

The website, nhwo.co.uk, was launched on December 14 and we would like to stress that it is not supported by the Neighbourhood and Home Watch Network (NHWN) which is the official national body representing ALL Neighbourhood Watch members in England & Wales.

The site pitches to Neighbourhood Watch members to register their scheme to obtain membership resources. It sells a ‘co-ordinators pack’ at £39.99 which includes two street signs, stickers and a high visibility vest with Neighbourhood Watch Co-ordinator on the back. Neighbourhood Watch stickers are supplied nationally at no cost to members and street signs are supplied in Birstall & Wanlip at no cost to members (in other parts of Leicestershire, street signs are charged from only £6.50)

Stolen car recovered - male arrested.

During a recent burglary in Wanlip, car keys were stolen and a car taken. This vehicle was subsequently used for other criminal purposes, using number plates stolen elsewhere in the county.
A male has been arrested and the vehicle recovered.

Following the recent report of damage to a vehicle in Fielding Road, our beat team carried out some 'house to house' enquiries. It was discovered that a further three incidents had occurred at the same time (there may be more) which had not been reported.
Please report ALL incidents of crime.The simple fact is that the more crime is reported, the more the police response will be. The police are always under pressure to deal with reported crimes and patrol areas where crimes regularly occur. If crimes are not reported then there cannot be a police response.
By not reporting all incidents, you are letting down your neighbours and other residents in the village.

Cedar Avenue - Burglary

On Saturday 7th January between 8.00am and 6.00pm, a house on Cedar Avenue was burgled. Entry was gained through a rear window. Car keys were stolen during the burglary and a vehicle was taken.

Man arrested after cash in transit robbery in Great Glen on Monday (January 9)

Officers investigating a cash in transit robbery in Great Glen have arrested a man in connection with the incident.
Police were called at about 12.45pm yesterday afternoon (Monday January 9) after a security guard, who was making a delivery in Glen Rise, was approached by two men.
The men threatened the guard and assaulted him with what is believed to be a baseball bat.
They then ran off with a quantity of cash to a nearby dark red Renault Megane, vehicle registration FY05ENO. The car left in the direction of the A6 and was driven by a third person
The car was later discovered abandoned at Glen Gorse Golf Club, Leicester.
A second vehicle which is also believed to be involved in the incident, a Black Renault Megane, vehicle registration FM54GXP, was recovered in the Birstall area of Leicester this afternoon.
The victim did not receive any injuries as a result of the robbery.
One of the men was wearing black clothing and the other was in grey. Both were wearing balaclavas.
A 27-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident and remains in police custody.
Detective Sergeant Nicole Main, the investigating officer, said: “This was a nasty incident during which the security guard’s helmet was cracked. Thankfully he wasn’t injured but the results could have been much worse. I would like to personally urge anyone with information about the incident or those responsible to call us immediately.
“We believe that the two recovered vehicles were travelling in convoy prior to the incident and are keen to speak to anyone who may have seen either of them.
“We would also like to speak to anyone who witnessed the occupants leaving the Renault Megane at the golf club. Did you see who left the vehicle? Did they get into another vehicle or leave on foot? Perhaps you saw where they went to? If so get in touch.”

Stolen Vehicle - Warning.

It has been reported to us that in the last few days a vehicle has been stolen in the village while it was being unloaded outside a house.
It is very easy to be distracted while carrying in your shopping (telephone, children etc).
Always make sure your vehicle is left secure even if you are leaving it for just a few moments. An open door or boot is an invitation to an opportunist thief.

Wellgate Avenue (close to Ambergate Drive). On Friday 30th December between 9am and 5pm the property was entered via a rear window, an amount of cash was stolen.

Fielding Road (middle section). On Friday 30th December between 2pm and 6.30pm. The property was entered via a conservatory at the rear and electrical items were stolen.

House Burglaries 15th December.

On Thursday 15th December there were two incidents of house burglaries in Birstall.

Wanlip Lane (close to Windmill Avenue), between 7.30pm and 8.30pm.
Becks Close, between 6.30pm and 8.30pm.

In both cases, entry was gained through patio doors at the rear of the property and electrical items were taken. It is thought that a vehicle must have been used to transport the stolen items.

Damage to Vehicles - 10th/11th December.

We have received the following message from PCSO Mark Butler:-
There have been a number of incidents where the off side rear quarter lights have been smashed to gain access to vehicles and for them to be searched and items taken included a Sat Nav, CD disc’s, loose change and a torch.
There were 8 incidents across the village they all happened between 23:00 on Saturday 10th and 08:00 on Sunday 11th December.
They occurred on Gwendolin Ave, Orchard Road, Lambourne Road, Blenheim Road, Copeland Road and Fielding Road.
If any one saw any thing suspicious in these areas around these times, could they please contact me by phoning 101 and leave me a message for me to get back to them.

Could you please encourage residents not leave anything of value in or on display in there vehicles. Especially at this time of year or someone else will be having a Happy Christmas at their expense.

Distraction Burglaries in the county 24/11 - 27/11.

This is a message for ALL Neighbourhood Watch members, Leicestershire Constabulary has issued advice after a number of distraction burglaries in the county in the past week.
All of the incidents have taken place at the homes of elderly people when the victims were distracted by visitors posing as workmen and cash and bank cards have been stolen. Your area may not have been targeted yet, but please warn your elderly and vulnerable residents to be aware of any unwanted callers.

Incidents have occurred at the following locations:
Sandhurst Street, Oadby at about 2pm on Thursday November 24 when a handbag containing two wallets, store cards and cash was stolen.
Holmfield Road, Leicester at about 12.40pm on Friday November 25 when a handbag containing cash and cards were stolen
Uppingham Road, close to the Goodwood Road area, Leicester at about 7.40pm on Friday November 25 when cash was stolen
Two of the incidents occurred in Willow Street, Leicester around 4.45pm on Saturday November 26, a purse containing cards and cash was stolen from one of the properties, nothing was stolen from the second house.
Queens Road, Leicester at about 1pm on Sunday November 27 when two wallets containing cash were stolen.
Detective Inspector Rob Widdowson is overseeing the investigations, he said: “Any incident where an elderly or vulnerable person has been deliberately targeted is despicable. Incidents of this nature are extremely rare and it is vitally important that we get this appeal across to as many people as possible so we can reduce the chances of this happening again. Even though the victims weren’t hurt in any way it’s still distressing for them. We are actively investigating all of the incidents and studying any available CCTV from these areas in a bid to identify those responsible. We are in the early stages of our enquiries and are looking at the possibility that these incidents may be linked''.

“We are keen to speak to anyone who may have been visited in similar circumstances and anyone who may have seen someone paying a lot of attention to properties in the area.
“Did you see any vehicles not usually seen in the area being driven around or parked? Even the slightest detail could help with our investigation.
“We would like to take this opportunity to reiterate our advice to those who are visited in similar circumstances, please check the identity of the individual with the organisation they are claiming to represent – if you have any doubts, don’t let them in and contact the police immediately.

“We would ask anyone who has an elderly or vulnerable neighbour to keep an eye out for any suspicious activity and report any suspicions to the police.”

Man charged with assault.

Burglaries - Dark Nights.

The number of burglaries and similar incidents have increased recently in the villages since the evenings have become darker.

Newton Drive - suspicious prowler.

On Saturday evening/night 19th November, a resident has reported seeing a prowler in Newton Drive. He was seen to be looking through windows and doors of various properties.

Scam Telephone Calls.

We have had a number of reports from our members regarding scam telephone calls recently.
The subject of the call varies, but the pattern of the conversation remains similar. It always involves a free money saving offer (telephone lines/electricity supplier etc). The conversation is friendly and draws you in to believe that they already have some personal information about you. They don’t.
They will ask you to ‘confirm’ your name, date of birth etc. and then inevitably ask for details of your bank accounts.

These are blatant scam calls. Never give any personal information to any caller unless you are absolutely certain of their identity and never to any ‘cold caller’.
If you receive one these calls, it is sometimes very difficult later to remember exactly what information you may have given them, even if you were suspicious and ended the call in mid conversation.

If you are in any doubt about the information you may have inadvertently given out, contact your bank immediately and tell them about the call.

Burglary Warning to Syston, Cropston, Wanlip and Anstey

Detectives from Charnwood local policing unit are appealing for public help after a number of burglaries in the area.

The burglaries have occurred at homes in the Syston, Cropston, Wanlip and Anstey areas in November.

A burglary occurred at a house in the Loughborough Road area of Wanlip at about 7am on Sunday November 6. The property was entered and a white Apple MacBook in a black shoulder strap bag was stolen. A man was seen in the area around the time of the incident he was about 5’8” tall, medium build and wearing dark coloured trousers and a hooded top.

Distraction burglary at the home of an elderly woman in Birstall

Detectives from Charnwood local policing unit are appealing for public help after a distraction burglary at the home of an elderly woman in Birstall.
The incident took place sometime between 7.30pm and 7.45pm on Monday November 7 in the Denegate Avenue area when two men entered the elderly victim’s home separately.
One of the men claimed that the other was a burglar and he was trying to detain him.
The victim was asked to check the locations where she kept her money and whilst she was distracted a fawn coloured handbag was stolen. The bag contained cash and paperwork.
Both suspects were white, one of them has been described as being about 5’5” tall, slim to medium build. He was wearing a black woolley hat and a grey top.
The second suspect was of similar description to the first suspect but possibly slightly younger and with a slimmer face.
Detective Constable Kerry Washington is investigating the incident, she said: “The suspects have tried to confuse the elderly occupant into informing them where she kept her personal possessions and then gone on to steal items from the premises.
“This was a despicable crime against an elderly woman and it is vitally important that we trace the people responsible.
“I would urge anyone who was visited in similar circumstances or saw two men acting suspiciously in the area on Monday evening to contact us.
“Even the slightest detail could help with our enquiries. Any calls received will be treated in confidence.”

Appeal following Birstall burglary.

Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward after jewellery was taken during a burglary in Wanlip Lane, Birstall.
The incident happened sometime between 1.30pm and 1.45pm on Monday October 24, when an occupant from the house came home to find a window had been broken and spotted someone running down the side of the house.
Inside the house it was clear that all the rooms have been searched and drawers and cupboards had been left open.
Items of Asian jewellery including gold necklaces, gold bangles, bracelets and earrings were stolen along with some cash and a HP laptop.

The man seen leaving the house has been described as being white, of skinny build and was wearing a black zip up top, dark denim jeans and a baseball cap that was on sideways.
The man ran down the side of the house towards the centre of Birstall before turning right onto Orchard Road.

Detective Constable Kerry Washington, the investigating officer, said: “I am hoping that with details of the incident, times, dates and a description we will be able to get witnesses to come forward.

“If you can place yourself in the area at the time of the incident then have a think about if there is anything you can provide to our investigation. A name, further description, details of vehicles or anything that you think could be linked. It isn’t too late to help us so please get in touch.”

Scrap Metal Collectors - Suspicious Activity.

We have today received two reports from our members of suspicious activity by scrap metal collectors in the village.
In both instances they were seen searching through waste skips on private drives and then looking through the front windows of the property. In one instance they then made a deliberate effort to gain access to the porch area.
The first report concerned a White 'flat backed' lorry, the second involved a Land Rover and trailer.
If you see any suspicious activity of this nature, please report it immediately to the police with as much information as possible (vehicle number/description etc).

The collection of scrap metal is a legitimate business, but it should obviously only be collected with the owners consent.

House Burglary - Dale Close.

Youth Charged with Robbery.

Following some good work by the local beat team, forensic officers and CID, a youth from the city area has been charged with robbery at a premises in Sibson Road. The incident occurred some weeks ago and involved two youths who used threats of force to make the occupants hand over goods and cash. The youth also faces charges relating to similar incidents in the county.

Damage to Vehicles.

There have been three recent incidents of damage to vehicles in Birstall.

Wanlip Lane. On the 17th October a car on a driveway was broken into and then set alight.
Sibson Road. On the 18th October between 5.45pm and 7.00pm, a vehicle parked on a driveway had both front and rear number plates stolen.
Acacia Avenue. Between 1.00pm on the 18th and 2.00pm on the 19th October, a car parked on a driveway had the door damaged.

There is absolutely no need to pay any money to join NHW. Birstall & Wanlip asks for a donation, it is not a fee or subscription.

On October 17th 2011, the police national single non-emergency number – 101 – will be rolled out across the Leicestershire Force area. All 43 Chief Constables have agreed to adopt 101, which already operates in a four forces with great success.

From October 17 2011, calling 101 will replace the dialling of 0116 222 2222 for all non-emergency calls.

Members of the public can call 101 for updates on cases, to add information to an existing case or to contact their local officer.

For emergencies you will continue to call 999.

At approximately 10.00pm on Sunday 9th October there was an attempted break-in at a house in Paget Avenue. The occupier disturbed a youth trying keys in the front door. There were two other youths close by, all three were wearing hooded tops and two of them had cycles. When disturbed they made off towards Northfields Avenue.

We have had a number of reports in the last few days of roofing/building contractors touring the village. Their technique is to scare you into having unnecessary work carried out immediately (and obviously for a cash payment). If any tradesman doesn't supply you with an address and a 'landline' telephone number, be suspicious.

Our advice is as always:-
1) Use local tradesmen whenever possible.
2) Ask friends and neighbours for recommended tradesmen.
3) Obtain at least three quotes for any work.

A Couple of Similar Incidents ?

During the last two months, there has been two very similar late night incidents in the Church Hill/Front Street area. In both cases, the occupiers of the properties were disturbed during the early hours of the morning by someone banging on the front door. In neither incident was the door opened, but a female voice was heard, saying that she was 14 and asking to be let in. Other female voices were heard and a female was seen walking around the area.
The most recent incident was at approximately 2.00am on Sunday 25th September.

Occupants disturb burglar in the Birstall area

Officers from Charnwood local policing unit are appealing for witnesses after an attempted burglary in Birstall.

The incident took place at about 11.15am on Friday September 9 in the Beechfield Avenue area.

A man knocked on the door of a house and when there was no answer he went around to the back of the premises where he attempted to enter the house by smashing a kitchen window.

The occupants of the house disturbed the suspect and he then ran off up the garden towards the park.

The suspect has been described as a white man, 5’8”-5’10” tall, of medium build, in his late 40s to early 50s, with short grey hair which was possibly brushed back. He was wearing a think smart black or dark blue jacket which was zipped up at the front.

PC Ian Mundy is investigating the incident, he said: “There is a possibility that the suspect may have knocked on other doors in the area and we would urge anyone who may have been visited in similar circumstances to contact us.

“We would also like to speak to anyone who saw a similar described man running away from the area or recognises the description and may know who was responsible.”

Warning to residents as burglars pose as Neighbourhood Watch representatives

A 60-year-old was confronted by three men who broke into his home while he was watching television.The intruders entered the Thurcaston home, in the Leicester Road area of the village, at 10.20pm on Thursday. When they came face-to-face with him in the lounge, they told him they were from Neighbourhood Watch and were there to check his house.

The burglars, who did not harm the man, left with a small amount of cash. Detective Constable Kim Potter said: "I urge anyone who was in the area, close to the junction with the A46, to contact us if they remember seeing anyone acting suspiciously."

All of the men are white. One is in his mid-20s, 5ft 8in and of medium build. He had a dark woolly hat and dark clothing. The second is slightly older and taller, and it is believed he was wearing a hat and dark clothing. The third suspect is about 5ft 10in and was also wearing dark clothing.

Membership and the setting up of Neighbourhood Watch schemes in Leicestershire & Rutland is totally FREE. Birstall and Wanlip requests an annual donation (suggested at £1), but this is an optional donation, not a fee or membership subscription.

Our representatives who work at a local level and in partnership with their local Police neighbourhood teams would never request any fees to become a member or set up a Neighbourhood Watch scheme. Other areas have the potential cost of street signs, which are provided free in Birstall & Wanlip.

Local community safety funding available until 1st December 2011

The Home Office yesterday released the guidance notes and application process for the £10 million ‘Community Action against Crime Innovation Fund’ with £5m available for this year and a further £5m for 2012/13. The purpose of the Innovation Fund is to stimulate creative new approaches to tackling crime by empowering local groups to develop innovative projects to tackle local community safety problems.

The Home Office are keen to attract applications from grassroots community activists who are not traditional recipients of government grants and also for the voluntary sector to work more closely with community safety partnerships and other statutory agencies to drive and co-design and co-deliver services and community safety projects.

The Application Process

Applications can be made between £1,000 and £15,000 for each year (small grants) and for£15,001 and £50,000 for large grants. The application process is now open and runs until the 1st December 2011. The grant panels are locally based and have a rolling allocation process meaning that grants will be assessed in date order and awarded on a first come first served basis if they meet the awarding criteria. Therefore, I would recommend that if members are planning to apply for a grant then please start to do so as soon as possible.

Scam Call - "Stop Unwanted Calls for a Small Fee"

One of our members just reported a call received last night ... "from a man asking to speak to the owner of the line. He said they knew we were receiving unwanted telemarketing calls. I said we were registered with the Telephone Preference Service, so received few. He said they could stop all calls,especially ones from abroad, not controllable by TPS, for a small one-off lifelong fee. Did I know that TPS charged a service charge on my phone bill. I told him it wasn't true and we weren't interested and rang off."

This is a scam. Unfortunately, it is not possible to stop international sales calls (without blocking all international calls coming in).

Registering with the TPS is the right thing to do and it's free.

Scam Telephone Call.

One of our committee members has today received a telephone call offering a 'free electricity saving device, because you are good customer and pay your bills on time'. The caller just needed to check a few details. The questions quickly got around to the name of your bank etc.
The caller was very vague about the company they represented and when checked later the telephone number was withheld.
This is a blatant scam.

Be Wary of Strangers asking for Directions

Police in Leicester are urging members of the public to be wary about strangers asking for help with directions.

It comes after a theft was reported by a member of the public in Leicester in the past week. In this case she had been enjoying a drink in a coffee shop when she was approached by strangers asking for help with directions.

The strangers appeared to have poor English, and laid out a large map on the table. Once they had gone, the coffee drinker noticed the mobile phone she had placed on the table earlier was missing. There was a spate of similar thefts last year in Leicester, which led to some offenders being arrested.

Sergeant Rob Randell, from Leicestershire Constabulary, said: “It is a natural reaction to try to help someone out who appears to be lost. “However, offenders are taking advantage of this willingness to help. I would urge members of the public to make sure they can always see their valuables, especially where someone appears to be trying to cover them with a map.

Charnwood police working to stop increase in burglaries

Police in Charnwood have launched ‘Operation Hammer’ in response to a sharp increase in burglaries.
In July 2011, 47 burglaries were reported to the police in Charnwood compared to 19 in July 2010 – an increase of 28 offences. So far this month (August 1st to 19th) there have been 17 homes broken into.
Crime analysis shows that the offences are occurring across the policing area with no distinct pattern linking them together, although they are being committed in the major villages such as Birstall, Thurmaston, Mountsorrel, Rothley, Cropston, Sileby, Anstey, Barrow and Quorn with the majority occurring during daylight hours.
In response to this increase, officers have launched Operation Hammer which will tackle the problem in a number of ways. A dedicated patrol strategy is in place to ensure officers are in the right place at the right time; Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology in marked and unmarked vehicles is being deployed across the Charnwood area to detect suspicious or ‘wanted’ vehicles; officers are doing regular stop checks of people, and cars, across the Charnwood area acting suspiciously. Scenes of crime officers will be maximising all forensic opportunities and all Special Constables are being tasked with Op Hammer duties. Covert work is being undertaken to identify and arrest suspects both in the Charnwood area and the City.
A crime prevention campaign is also being launched with a leaflet drop in residential areas encouraging home owners to keep their homes secure by locking all windows and doors as well as recording details of their property (serial numbers, photographs etc) and the use of forensic property marking technology such as Smartwater.
Inspector Duncan Southall, Commander of Charnwood local policing unit, said; “We’ve launched Operation Hammer in response to the recent increase in burglaries and want to reassure local residents that everything is being done to arrest the people responsible. We have put a lot of resources into this campaign and I would encourage anyone who has any information which might help us to get in touch. We believe the offenders are travelling from outside the Charnwood area so we’re using the latest number plate recognition technology to monitor cars coming through the policing area and stopping them if appropriate.
“The recent warm weather may be to blame for the increase as a considerable number of the offences have been committed because windows and doors have been left unlocked and open and I would really urge everyone to help us by keeping their property secure. The nuisance of locking up and switching lights on when you go out is nothing compared to the distress of being burgled and our research shows that the majority of burglars are opportunist criminals, so taking simple preventative measures to secure your property will go a long way.”
“I would also ask people to be patient if they are stopped by officers asking them to account for their movements; they are doing it to make sure people are there for a legitimate reason.”

We have now confirmed that the caller mentioned below was genuine.

On 28th July a member in Mill Close reported a doorstep caller purporting to be from The Baptist Church. They explained that they were doing a 'life Survey'. No identification was given and no leaflets etc offered. The caller had the appearance of a walker/rambler.
The householder was in our opinion quite rightly suspicious and did not engage in a conversation with them.
This may or may not have been a genuine caller, but be aware that criminals will use any excuse to get into your home and to get personal details.

Two of our members have recently reported receiving telephone calls purporting to be a 'Crime Survey' and offering the chance to qualify for a free alarm system. During the call many personal questions are asked.
This is a scam.
The Watch has attempted to contact the callers using the telephone number given and has not been successful.
It is assumed that the purpose of the call is to establish what property of value you may have, the level of crime protection and when you are likely to be away etc. We believe that there is no such thing as a free alarm system and urge everyone to never invite these people to call at your home.
Always be vary wary of giving any personal details to any cold caller.

Indecent exposure in Birstall

Officers are appealing for witnesses after an incident of indecent exposure in Birstall.
At around 4.55pm on Tuesday July 5, 2011 man was seen to indecently expose himself in a pathway to a field off Birstall Road. The incident was witnessed by a woman walking by with several young children.
The man is described as white, aged between 20 and 40-years-old and of medium build.
Detective Constable Maria Pancholi, who is investigating this incident, said: "This incident was obviously quite upsetting for the woman.
“I am appealing for the public's help to find this man. This incident happened in the day on a busy road so we would like to hear from anyone who was in the area around the time of the incident and may have seen this man.
"If you have any information which could assist with our enquiries please get in touch."

We have received further reports from our members about telephone calls informing them that they have a computer virus which needs to be fixed immediately. The caller purports to be calling from 'Windows'. Of course there is a payment required which involves you giving them your credit/debit card details.
THIS IS A SCAM.
Do not give your card details to anyone unless you are absolutely sure of their identity and never to any cold caller.
The intention of these callers is simply to get enough information from you to enable them to empty you bank accounts !

Pavement Parking campaign rolled out across Charnwood

A MAJOR crackdown on pavement parking is being rolled out across Charnwood following a successful pilot scheme in Loughborough.

The Cars Off Pavements campaign was launched in Loughborough in March to stop vehicles from blocking pavements and has led to a 75 per cent reduction in incidents at four hotspot areas.

Blocked pavements put vulnerable people at risk as pedestrians in wheelchairs, parents with pushchairs or the partially sighted are forced to walk on busy roads to get by.

Teenage shop robber is jailed

A teenager who attempted to rob Wanlip Convenience Store, Birstall, on February 17th has been sentenced to four years' detention by Leicester Crown Court.

The youth, who cannot be named because of a court order, admitted robbery at Mark Convenience Store in Thurmaston the previous day. On both occasions he brandished a menacing firearm, which police said could easily have been mistaken for a sawn-off shotgun, but which turned out to be an air pistol. He admitted having the air pistol on both occasions. CCTV footage from the Thurmaston robbery was played in court.

In the Birstall attempted robbery, the youth fled empty-handed, chased by the shopkeeper, dropping a carrier bag with his fingerprints on. Police found the unloaded airgun dumped in dense brambles, also with his fingerprints on. They also found a pile of the defendant's clothing, abandoned and set alight.

Incident on Birstall Road - maybe carjacking attempt

From our Facebook page, a member has reported a worrying incident this week: As she was driving along the Birstall Road, near to Holt Road about 9am there was a black BMW parked on the road with its hazard lights on. A man was standing in the road and flagged her down. She was about to open the window to ask what the trouble was but she was suddenly frightened by how aggressive he looked and he tried to get into the car. She also had a baby in the car. She quickly drove away. Here is a description of the man:
White male, mid to early 40s. About 6ft tall and well built. Wearing a white T-shirt and leather jacket. The police have been informed.

Teenage pair raided home of pensioner

Two teenagers were locked up yesterday after admitting burgling the house of an 80-year-old.

James McCorkindale (18) was given three years at a young offenders' institute after breaking into the house in Birstall.

A 17-year-old accomplice, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was given a 12-month detention and training order.

Prosecutor Mark Bishop told Leicester Crown Court how McCorkindale and his partner in crime had broken into the house in Kilby Avenue just after midnight on December 23 last year.

They ran off after the pensioner who lived there heard noises coming from outside.

Mr Bishop said the homeowner noticed a window had been broken and called the police. Nothing had been stolen.

He said McCorkindale, of Robert Hall Street, Stocking Farm, Leicester, and his accomplice then tried to break into another house 10 minutes later in East Park Road.

They were heard by a 20-year-old who lived in the house. The teenagers ran off but were stopped by police nearby.

Andrew Bolc, for McCorkindale, said his client had an unattractive record and had spent most of his life locked up.

Helen Johnson, for the 17-year-old, said her client regretted his actions and was trying to avoid a life of crime.

The incident took place sometime between 11.30am and 4.30pm on Monday May 2 in Loughborough Road when a house was broken into and a number of items were stolen.

Amongst the items stolen was a 32” Panasonic LCD television, a 42” Panasonic plasma television, a 20” Panasonic LCD television, a Panasonic stereo system, a Cannon digital camera and a Sky TV box.

Detective Constable Sukhvinder Obhi is investigating the incident, he said: “A number of large items were stolen during the incident and there’s a strong possibility that a vehicle may have been used to transport the goods.

“The house is situated on a busy road I would appeal to commuters and passers-by who may have been in the Loughborough Road area on the afternoon of Monday May 2, which was a Bank Holiday, to contact us if they remember seeing anyone acting suspiciously.

“We would also urge anyone who knows someone who has acquired items similar to the ones stolen or has been approached by someone selling them in suspicious circumstances to contact us.”

Scam Letters.

We have been informed recently of a number of scam letters being received by our members in Birstall.
They purport to come from a bank official in Hong Kong and refer to a victim of a fatal accident (who just happens to have the same surname as the recipient!) in China. The letter then invites you to claim a large amount of money from the victims unclaimed estate. All you need to do is contact them and (obviously) supply your bank details.
All these letters are a scam.
Do not contact them in any way.
Bin it.
Most of these letters actually originate from West African countries, they are referred to by Trading Standards and the Police as 'Nigerian Letters'. All they want is the information necessary to empty your bank accounts.

Attempted distraction burglary in Birstall.

Officers are appealing for information following an attempted distraction burglary in Birstall.
The incident happened at around 10am on Friday April 15, 2011 when a man knocked on an address on Iris Avenue.
The victim, in her eighties, answered the door and the man claimed he worked for a gas company and was investigating a gas leak nearby. He claimed he needed to come in so he could inspect if the house had a gas problem.
The victim refused several times and the man eventually left without gaining access to the property.
He is described as white, in his mid thirties, of medium build with short brown hair. He was wearing a dark jacket which had a small badge and photo on it.
Detective Constable Sukhvinder Obhi, who is investigating this incident, said: "This victim did exactly the right thing by not letting this man in his home and calling a relative straight away. The man did have some ID but it did not appear genuine and the man did become agitated when challenged by the woman.
"We would like to remind residents that you not have to let anyone into your home who you do not know. Anyone from a legitimate company will have identification with them and will not mind you checking with the company that they are a genuine employee.
"If you are in doubt, do not be afraid to refuse to allow them in. You can call a friend, relative or neighbour and ask them first or call the police on 999 if you think they are suspicious.
"If anyone has any information regarding this suspect or perhaps was visited by someone using a similar story, we would urge you to get in touch."

We have received recent reports from our members about 'Roofing Contractors' cold calling at their homes. The usual approach is to tell you that there is a visible serious problem with your roof, loose or broken tiles etc. The recent reports have included a description of an unmarked white lorry.

Our advice is:-
Whenever possible use local tradesmen or those recommended to you by friends or neighbours. Always obtain a quotation of the costs involved and give yourself time to consider other options.
Be very wary of any offers to carry out work by people who ask for cash payment and don't appear to have an address or landline telephone number.

Appeal for information after man robbed in a Birstall park

Detectives from Charnwood local policing unit are appealing for witnesses after a 43-year-old man was robbed in a park in Birstall.
The victim was walking through Birstall Park in School Lane at about 11.20pm on Friday March 18 when he was approached by two men who threatened him and demanded property.
The victim was threatened with a weapon believed to be an air gun or BB gun before the offenders made off with a small amount of cash and his HTC Desire mobile telephone.
The victim received a minor injury to his face during the incident.
Both offenders had their faces covered and were wearing dark clothing. The offender who was carrying the weapon has been described as being about 5’10-6’ tall and of medium build.
The second offender was about 5’5”-5’6” tall and of medium build.
Detective Constable Kim Potter is investigating the incident, she said: “The victim was returning home from an evening out and understandably the incident has left him quite shocked.
“It’s very important that we speak to anyone who was in the area during the evening of Friday March 18, did you see two men acting suspiciously or have you heard rumours locally about who was responsible?
“We can assure anyone who has any doubts about contacting the police with information, that your call will be dealt with in confidence and you can also report information via Crimestoppers, which is free and anonymous.”

Warning about telephone calls from bogus police officials.

Leicestershire Constabulary has issued a warning to the public about telephone calls from people posing as police officials.
Officers are currently investigating two incidents where elderly people have received telephone calls from people claiming they are from the fraud squad in London and are investigating financial organisations.
The caller requests personal details from the victim and requests that they withdraw a large amount of money from their account and meet them at a given location.
Fortunately in both cases the victims became suspicious of the telephone call and reported the matter to the police.
PC Wesley Nelson is investigating the incidents, he said: “From enquiries we’ve conducted so far it’s believed the telephone calls may have been made from abroad but the numbers registering in the telephones are London numbers.
“We have determined that the numbers are registered to customers abroad which is a legitimate practice and one that telephone service providers use on a regular basis.
“We would advise anyone who receives a similar telephone call to never disclose personal details to the caller or agree to hand money over, organisations such as the serious fraud office would not contact the public direct, they would liaise with the local police force.”

Warning - Cleaner repair scam.

One of our members has reported receiving a telephone call that started with, "Do you have a Dyson cleaner ?".
The conversation then continued with a very persistent sales pitch which offered a 'Two year service on the appliance at the bargain reduced price of £14.99'. The member refused the service but was suspicious about the caller and rang Dyson to check.
The reply from Dyson was that this is a scam and they receive many complaints along these lines. Invariably non existent faults are found and unnecessary repairs are carried out at very high prices.
Our advice is:- Wherever possible always use local businesses or contact the manufacturer for the names of authorised repairers.

Burglary - Birstall Road.

A bungalow under renovation on Birstall Road, close to Holly Hayes, was burgled between 6.00pm Monday 14th March and 10.30am on Tuesday 15th March. An amount of copper piping, a copper water tank and various tools were stolen. There must have been a vehicle used to take away the property.

Appeal after aggravated burglary in Birstall

Detectives investigating an aggravated burglary in Birstall are appealing for public help to trace those responsible.
The incident took place at about 12.45pm on Tuesday February 22 in the Station Road area of Birstall when three men forced their way into the home and threatened the occupants.
The offenders have then made off with cash and jewellery. No one was hurt during the incident.
Two of the men responsible were white and were wearing either balaclavas or masks on their faces.
Detective Constable Sukhvinder Obhi is investigating the incident, he said: “This was a frightening incident which understandably has left the occupants of the house extremely shocked and distressed.
“The incident took place during the day and I am sure someone may have seen some men acting suspiciously or the offenders leaving the area, if you believe you can help then please get in touch.

Scam - Warning.

We have been informed by our members of the following recent similar scams:-

1) Email. An email is received, warning you that your computer has a virus and asking you to 'Click Here' to clear it. This takes you to a site which asks you for payment by credit/debit card and personal details. Our member reported that this site/screen is actually quite difficult to get rid of.

2) Telephone. A telephone call is received warning you that your computer has a virus. The caller then proceeds to ask for details and payment as above.

I'm no expert on the subject, but I would question whether anyone you have not contacted yourself by email would know if you had a virus.

Do not give personal details or credit/debit card details to any website unless you are certain it is genuine. Always be wary of 'Click Here' instructions on unsolicited emails.

Park ranger assaulted in Watermead Country Park, Syston

Officers investigating an assault on a park ranger at Watermead Country Park in Syston are appealing for witnesses to contact them.
The incident took place at about 10.30am on Saturday February 26 in the Kingfisher Hide area of the park when the 37-year-old victim was approached by two men and then assaulted by one of the men.
The victim received injuries to his head and stomach during the incident and received medical treatment.
The man who assaulted the victim has been described as being of South-East Asian appearance, in his early 20s, about 5’11”, of stocky build, with short dark hair and wide looking eyes. He was wearing a black coat and grey combat trousers.
The second man was of Asian appearance, in his early 20s, about 6’1” tall, of slim build, with a goatee style beard. He was wearing a black woolly hat and black ‘Puffa’ type jacket.
PC Louise Albon is investigating the incident, she said: “The victim was at his place of work and carrying out routine checks in the area when he was assaulted, the incident has left him extremely shocked and distressed and we need to catch the people responsible.
“Watermead Country Park is a popular park for dog walkers and nature lovers and I am sure there were a number of people in the area on that Saturday morning (February 26), if you saw the suspects or you know anything about the incident then please get in touch.”

Youth charged following robberies in Thurmaston and Birstall.

A 16-year-old youth has been charged following two robberies in Thurmaston and Birstall.
The charges relate to a robbery on Wednesday February 16, 2011 at Mark Convenience store on Melton Road, Thurmaston and a robbery on Thursday February 17, 2011 at Wanlip Store on Wanlip Lane, Birstall.
The youth has been charged with one count of attempt robbery, one count of robbery and two counts of possessing a firearm.
He is due to appear at Loughborough Youth Court today (Thursday March, 3 2011).
A 16-year-old youth has also been arrested in connection with the robbery at Birstall and has been released on police bail pending further enquiries.

Arrest made following armed robberies in Thurmaston and Birstall

Officers who issued a witness appeal last week following two armed robberies have arrested a 16-year-old youth.
The first robbery happened at around 9.50pm on Wednesday February 16, 2011 when a man entered Mark Convenience store on Melton Road near to the junction with Rookery Lane, Thurmaston.
He threatened the shopkeeper with what has been described as a firearm demanding money. He was given a quantity of cash and also made off with alcohol and cigarettes from the store.
He was last seen on foot travelling towards Thurmaston village.
The second robbery happened at around 10.40am the following day (Thursday February 17, 2011) at Wanlip Store on Wanlip Lane, Birstall.
During this robbery the suspect again with what has been described as a firearm threatened the shopkeeper demanding money and then cigarettes. The shopkeeper managed to press a panic alarm and the man made off empty handed.
He was last seen turning onto into Lambourne Road in direction of Watermead Country Park.
A 16-year-old has been arrested in connection with these incidents and he has been released on police bail pending further enquiries.
Detective Constable Sean Lynch is appealing for anyone who has any information to please get in touch.
He said: “In both cases, the victims were thankfully left unharmed but have obviously been left extremely shocked and shaken by what happened.
“We believe that both these robberies have been committed by the same person due to the similarities between the two.
“We are still appealing for anyone who has any information regarding these robberies to please get in touch. Even the smallest of information you have may be useful to our enquiries.”

Robbery - Wanlip Avenue

An armed robbery took place this morning, Thursday 17th February at approximately 10.40am, on Wanlip Avenue.
No one was injured and nothing was actually taken during the incident.
The culprit was a male and wearing a pink shirt. He was last seen heading in the direction of Watermead Park. It is believed that a weapon has been recovered.
A similar incident took place in Thurmaston late on Wednesday evening and another in Syston last week.

Death threat sales calls in Leicestershire probed

Elderly people in Leicestershire are being warned after reports of residents being threatened by a company claiming to sell double glazing. The county council said it had received 12 complaints about a company claiming to be called Bowater. Trading standards said some people were threatened with fines, "green taxes" and even a death threat. Officials want to know if anyone else has received any such calls and urged people to be on their guard.

David Bull, head of Leicestershire County Council's trading standards, said: "It is sickening that older people are being threatened with fictitious taxes or fines, the loss of benefits or even death. "We are very concerned that this firm is deliberately targeting older people and we would urge people and their relatives to report all cases to us via Consumer Direct on 08454 04 05 06. "Reputable companies do not pressurise or threaten people."

Home Security - Bogus Calls.

We have today received the following message from the Leicestershire County Neighbourhood and Home Watch office:-

Nottinghamshire NHW have informed us that that cold callers are targeting elderly residents promising either to fit free burglar alarms or to "go 50:50" on the cost of fitting alarms to reduce the cost to older people.
In one of these cases the caller claimed to be from "Leicestershire Police Security" but was calling from an 0203 (London) telephone number. This is not a company that we are aware of.
A Google search on the full telephone number has revealed complaints from many parts of the UK in relation to this number. Other complaints allege that the caller seemed particularly to be trying to discover times when no-one would be at home.

Police advice is never to put your security in the hands of someone who has either turned up out of the blue at your door or has called you by telephone without your invitation. We would always suggest that you get at least two competitive quotes from NSI or SSAIB recognised companies (of which there are many in the Yellow Pages). Offers to carry out work free of charge should always be checked most carefully - think "if it seems too good to be true, it probably is."
